GratitudeThere’s more to Thanksgiving than turkey. In fact, this November holiday invites us to slow down in the middle of a potentially frantic final quarter -- to pause, break bread with family and friends, and consider the things for which we are thankful. But this shouldn’t just be limited to your life outside of work — every successful human resources team knows the value of cultivating a culture of gratitude at work.

We believe that employees who truly love the company they work for will never take their good fortune for granted. And this year, we put our theory to the test. Earlier this month, we asked our staff members some of the things they are grateful for — and their responses offer some ideas you can incorporate to improve the employee experience at your own organization.

Celebrate Your Work Family

Employees will be grateful to work in a family environment. Our employees at Berkshire feel that when they’re at work, they’re with family. “There is such a family environment here that you never feel unsupported by not only your managers but also your coworkers,” Michiko Clark says. Karen Turner echoes this sentiment. “Going to work doesn’t feel like work,” she says. “It feels more like going to visit family.”

The work environment is so vital to your employees’ success. Our employees appreciate the little things we provide, like daily breakfast. “Berkshire’s friendly and relaxed atmosphere makes it an amazing workplace,” Juanita Brassfield says. “The daily breakfast gives us the energy we need to be productive throughout the day.”

You want your employees to feel welcomed and appreciated at work. “I found Berkshire at a time when I was desperately looking for another job and, instead of work, I found a second home,” Christlyn Greaves says.

Promote a Positive Work-Life Balance

To prevent burnout, employees have to have a healthy relationship with their work. Making that happen includes benefits such as PTO, flexible hours and telecommuting. “Berkshire understands the need for flexibility in our schedules to compensate for hectic lifestyles and family surprises,” Chad Vargason says. Dionne Foster, a former stay-at-home mom, agrees. “I was a bit hesitant about re-entering corporate America, but I was excited to see that Berkshire had been on the ‘Top Workplaces’ list,” she says. “Berkshire has lived up to that for me.”

Offering remote-work opportunities is great for your employees, and it’s something we’ve offered for years — with excellent results. “Berkshire took a chance on adding remote workers over 11 years ago,” Cindy Karrow says. “I had the privilege of being one of the first at a time when that also worked perfectly with the rest of my life.” This sentiment is echoed by Charu Avasthy: “Eleven years of telecommuting and 13 years at Berkshire has been made possible by a company culture that continues to inspire and bring out the best in me.”

Flexibility and putting employee well-being first are vital to employee happiness. “I am grateful for the great work-life balance here at Berkshire,” Stephanie Stahr reiterates.

Cultivate a Team-Driven Mindset

Your employees should bring out the best in each other and should never be too busy to help each other out. “Whether you need advice, help meeting a deadline or professional development guidance, everyone helps each other,” Lauren Buerger says. “You never hear ‘That’s not part of my job.’” Joshua Meyer agrees. “The people of Berkshire are simply wonderful,” he says.

Interacting with a great team in a positive way produces excellent outcomes for individuals and their work. “Working with Berkshire has given me the opportunity to learn, teach and grow in the last nine-plus years,” Lisa Roeder says. This personal fulfillment comes out in employee work. “I routinely see the positive impact of my work on my team and my clients,” Sonia Chapin says. Sabine Pauyo sums up working with the Berkshire team: “I’m very grateful to work with a great group of people who share the same vision,” she says.

Invest in Your Employees

Your employees are so much more than drones on the floor. They’re the lifeblood of your business, and they deserve an investment of your time and resources. “Berkshire provides us with resources to prepare for retirement and matches a percentage of our 401(k) investment,” Stefanie Legge says. Offerings like these demonstrate a commitment to your employees’ welfare. “Berkshire really cares about you as a person, not just a worker,” Danielle Entrot says.

Putting your employees first is a model for growth and sustainability. “A lot of companies put profits and growth before people and infrastructure,” Paul Toren says. “Berkshire has its priorities straight.” Kathy Healy says she also appreciates Berkshire’s people-first approach. “I am grateful for being employed with a good, strong, self-sustaining company who cares and listens to its employees,” she says.

When you prioritize your employees, they will return the favor. As Angela Tates says, “We work hard, but we also feel appreciated for what we do.”
